John Dunning
Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Dunning brings a diverse background with significant start-up experience.  As an investor at Wasatch Venture Fund (now Epic Ventures), he focused on a mixture of life science and technology investing, participating in investments in New Mexico while assisting in the oversight of others.  Prior to joining Wasatch, he worked as a Business Development Manager at NextCard, Inc., one of the leading online direct marketing experts. Before NextCard, Mr. Dunning worked as a senior Operations Manager/Manager of Strategic Partnerships at iOwn.com, Inc.  During his time at iOwn, he contributed extensively to the organizational development, improvement and management of iOwn's loan operations, leading the top producing loan region at iOwn for much of his time at the company.  Mr. Dunning holds a B.A from the University of Oregon and an M.B.A. from Thunderbird, the American Graduate School of International Management.

Lauren C. Costantini Ph.D.
Vice President of Medical and Clinical Affairs

Dr. Lauren C. Costantini is a dynamic leader with demonstrated success in driving products from research through to commercialization.  Dr. Costantini was most recently Vice President, Research and Development at Sierra Neuropharmaceuticals, focusing on intracerebral delivery of medications for epilepsy. Prior to joining Sierra, she was Vice President of Clinical Development at Accera, Inc. where she directed the Clinical and Regulatory departments through clinical trials and commercialization of an Alzheimer’s disease product.  Prior to Accera, she was Director of Product Development at Titan Pharmaceuticals, Inc., developing novel treatments for CNS disorders including drug delivery, gene therapy and cell therapy platforms for Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease, chronic pain, stroke, schizophrenia, diabetes.  She has led preclinical development, pivotal international Phase III clinical trials, and regulatory affairs, and has always played a key role in business development activities including licensing, patents, due diligence, and partnering discussions.  Previously she was on faculty at Harvard Medical School where she investigated mechanisms and treatments for neurodegeneration.  Lauren is a frequent invited lecturer on CNS therapeutics, and serves on review boards for several journals and grant foundations including the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s, and serves in the Neurotechnology Industry Organization (NIO) connecting neurotechnology to policymakers.  Dr. Costantini holds a B.S. from Purchase College in Biology and Chemistry, a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences: Neuroscience from the Albany Medical School/University of Albany with post-doc work at Harvard Medical School.

 

David Shine
Vice President of Developmentt

David Shine has over twenty years of experience leading development of Class II and Class III devices. He has experience in all aspects of medical device development, including concept development, prototyping, system design and integration, contract manufacturing and outsourcing, device production, regulatory approval, commercial product launch and post-launch field support. He has held leadership positions covering the entire device lifecycle from concept development to full-scale device manufacturing. Prior to joining Clarimedix, Mr. Shine served as Director of Engineering for Neuromonics, a commercial stage company developing products to treat tinnitus, with overall responsibility for all R&D activities including both device engineering and clinical development.
Prior to Neuromonics Mr. Shine served as Vice President of Engineering for Light Sciences, a venture funded startup company, where he led the development of light emitting diode devices to activate the company’s proprietary pharmaceutical compound with therapeutic applications in Oncology, Cardiovascular disease and Opthalmology. Prior to joining Light Sciences, Mr. Shine spent ten years with bioMérieux, a world-wide leader in the field of automated in-vitro diagnostic equipment. He served in a variety of leadership positions in the Instrument R&D group, including engineering manager and project leader. In addition, he spent two years serving as Director of Instrument Manufacturing with responsibility for production, manufacturing engineering and global product support activities for the complete line of automated diagnostic equipment produced in North America. Mr. Shine holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and an M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University..

 

Duane C. Knight Jr.
Chief Financial Officer

Duane Knight is an investor and CFO for CLARIMEDIX.  Mr. Knight, a CPA with an MBA, has nearly 25 years of finance and consulting experience. Prior to CLARIMEDIX, Duane was the CFO and Vice-president of Finance for Denver Biomedical, Inc., an early stage medical device manufacturer where he managed accounting, finance and treasury, private insurance and Medicare reimbursement, corporate governance, and due diligence for merger and acquisition activity.  He led the company through significant financial transactions, including: exit provision for a venture capital partner; recapitalization with a private equity partner, refinance of debt to provide shareholder dividend payment; and sale of the company (to Cardinal Health, Inc).  Before Denver Biomedical, Duane operated his own consulting practice.  This practice included performing accounting, auditing, investigation, and business advisory services for companies in numerous industries with extensive experience in Securities and Exchange Commission matters including IPOs and secondary offerings, mergers and acquisitions, and systems analysis.  He also completed purchase investigation/due diligence reviews for asset and stock purchases for his clients.  It was through this practice that he became involved with DBI.  He was also CFO of Mallon Resources Corporation, a publicly-owned holding company, an audit manager for two auditing firms, and an instructor at Metropolitan State College of Denver.  Mr. Knight earned a BS in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting and a minor in Economics from Colorado State University and his MBA from the University of Colorado.

 

Dr. Robert Poyton Ph.D.
Scientific Co-Founder

Dr. Robert Poyton is the discoverer of the Cco/NO Receptor and leads work on understanding its functionality and application.  Dr. Poyton has been recognized for his research on oxygen sensing, oxygen-regulated gene expression, cellular energy production, mitochondrial dysfunction in aging and degenerative disease, and signaling pathways between the mitochondrion and the nucleus.  
Dr. Poyton’s recent research focuses on hypoxic signaling pathways, which are crucial for the survival of mammals and nearly all other organisms, and which provide protection against a variety of pathophysiological disease states.  The winner of numerous awards, Dr. Poyton holds a B.A. in Biology (Magna Cum Laude) from Brown University, a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from U.C. Berkeley with post-doc work in Biochemistry at Cornell University.  Dr. Poyton is on faculty and heads a research group in the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

 

Dr. Michael Stowell, Ph.D.
Scientific Advisor

Dr. Michael Stowell is a professor in the Molecular Cellular and Developmental Biology department at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Dr. Stowell has received many awards and fellowships and has diverse research expertise in membrane biophysics, molecular and supramolecular structural studies, structure based drug design, neurobiology, silicon neural mimetics, stem cell research, implementation of biological materials for nanotechnology, and Alzheimer’s. He is the principle investigator on numerous grants including an international HFSP award, NIH SBIR grant, NSF CBR grant, NIH EUREKA award, and HHMI Collaborative Innovation Award. He has published numerous scientific articles and has been awarded over 20 patents. He is a founder and board member of several early stage biotechnology and drug delivery companies and consults for a variety of companies from startup to fortune 500. Dr. Stowell received his B.A. in Chemistry and Philosophy/Religion at Reed College, his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology and completed post doc work at the Medical Research Council in Cambridge England and the University of Kyoto in Japan
